Git
It’s branches become the also a main code so it has many master copies to the code, compared to other systems that only have one master copy. This makes it faster than other version controls systems. This also makes every operation local so that you don’t have to go to the server every time to look into the history of the project. It also will hardly lose anything as it tries to save as much as it can when merging.
Mercurial
It is very simple and very fast and designed for larger projects. Its name comes from mercury, the greek god of speed. It also comes with its own tutorial and handbook. It is quicker because of the way it updates to the trunk as few times as possible to reduce the server overflow. IT uses a three way merge before any other.
CVS
The original version control system. It is the standard for most companies. Its pretty old but it does its job. As such it is the most basic version of version control and does what it you think it would typically do, such as having one master project, needing to go onto the internet to edit or view the project. It also has people use their own working versions before being able to post it to the master copy. Its able to do things like compare files before merging them.
